Rules in sports are to make games fair when rules do the opposite they need to be changed
1. Football: team
is on own 4 yard line and takes a ten yard holding penalty. Ball gets moved back to 2 (half the distance to the goal). It’s now 1st and 12 from the 2. Why isn’t it 1st and 20 from the 2 yard line. It’s a ten yard penalty not a two yard penalty. Team shouldn’t get benefit from taking a penalty just due to field position.
2. Football: Bills have ball on opponents 2 yard line. Defense jumps offsides. Ball moves to one yard line. Bills have false start on next play. Ball moves back to six. Why? Both are five yard penalties. They should be consistent within the set of downs. Both penalties should have the same yardage marked off.
3. Hockey: Montreal is leading the Sabres 2-1 with 20 seconds left. Eichel gets puck with goalie out of position and has chance to score tying goal. Montreal defenseman tackles Eichel and prevents goal. He goes to box for 20 seconds. Why? It’s a two minute minor penalty not a 20 second penalty. He should be forced to serve full two minutes and game should be extended 1:40. Would only apply where team going on PP can score enough goals on PP to effect outcome of game. (3-1 score would not extend game UNLESS it was a five minute major or double minor since team can score more than one goal on PP).
4. Hockey: Why does team that has taken aenalty get to ice the puck without consequences? What other sport gives the team that has committed an infraction a benefit? Icing the puck while short handed should carry the same consequences as if it were done while even strength: players remain on ice with no line change. This should also increase scoring since defending penalty killers will be more tired and PP % should increase.
5. Baseball: Starting pitcher pitches 4 2/3 innings of shutout baseball. His team is leading 4-0. Next batter hits a line drive off pitcher’s shin forcing pitcher out of game. Four relievers come in to preserve 6-0 win. Official scorer now chooses which of the four relief pitchers gets the win. Why shouldn’t the official scorer have the discretion to award the win to the starter? Under present rules the starter CANNOT get the win unless he’s pitched five innings.
6. Baseball: Runner on 1st base with two outs. 3-2 count on batter. Base runner running on the pitch. Batter hits ball to deep right center that will clearly score the runner from 1st. Ball bounces over wall for ground rule double. Baserunner forced to return to 3rd base under present rules. Why? Shouldn’t umpires have discretion to award player home plate where he “clearly” would have scored on the play.
7. Basketball: Steph Curry hits Draymond Green for a layup and gets the assist. Same facts but Green is fouled and makes both free throws. Curry set up Green for the two points in both situations but doesn’t get an assist in the latter situation. Why not? If Green only made 1 of 2 freethrows Curry should get .5 assist.
8. Hockey: Goalie makes save and puck bounces to McDavid who carries puck up entire ice and feeds Lucic for tap in goal. Both McDavid and Goalie get assists. Why? Goalie did nothing to directly contribute to the goal which is the definition of “assist”. Should be scorers discretion on assists like it is in Basketball and Lacrosse.
9. Lacrosse: team A takes a penalty. They then take two more. They have three guys in the box when team B scores. All three are released from box. Why? Rule should be like hockey: only one comes out per goal.
10. Soccer: let’s no even go there. When a player can take the ball from an opposing players hand with less than a minute left in “stoppage time” and dribble it away from the other player thus wasting 15-20 seconds in a 1-0 game. Then the referee comes over and wastes another ten seconds giving the offending player the dreaded yellow card. 30 seconds later the game ends without extending it for the flagrant abuse of time. This ACTUALLY HAPPENED YESTERDAY IN THE WORLD CUP SEMIFINAL. Sports that allow running time while players argue with refs, roll around on the ground ala Neymar or run into the stands after scoring a goal and celebrating for 2-3 minutes make no sense to me
What other stupid rules are there? Let me know.
